Grassland Sparrows in High Country News

Our restoration project in the Babocomari watershed, near Elgin, Arizona, is designed to study changes in grassland sparrow populations and their winter habitat. Here’s an article in the September 2, 2013 issue of High Country News about the blight of these birds in other regions of the Chihuahuan Desert.

As the article touches upon, scientists long believed that threats to breeding ground habitat has caused the decline in these delicate species. However, degradation to overwintering habitat in these grasslands may be a major factor in the decline of these migrating birds.
